The District Court operates at the local level, handling less severe civil and criminal cases. Its civil jurisdiction covers small claims, minor family law matters, and local disputes.
In criminal matters, it deals with summary offenses and certain indictable offenses that can be tried summarily.
The District Court also handles licensing matters and issues relating to domestic violence.
The Circuit Court is a regional court that deals with both civil and criminal cases.
Its civil jurisdiction includes family law matters, contract disputes, and property issues, while its criminal jurisdiction involves indictable offenses that are not severe enough to be tried in the High Court.
The Circuit Court also hears appeals from the District Court.
The High Court has full original jurisdiction, meaning it can hear any civil or criminal case.
It typically handles serious matters such as major civil disputes, judicial reviews, and significant criminal cases.
It also hears appeals from the Circuit Court in civil and criminal matters.
The Court of Appeal deals with appeals from the High Court and, in criminal matters, from the Circuit Criminal Court.
It was established to reduce the backlog of cases in the Supreme Court and to provide a more efficient appellate process.
The Supreme Court is the highest court in Ireland. It primarily serves as an appellate court, hearing appeals from the Court of Appeal and, in certain cases, directly from the High Court.
The Supreme Court has the authority to review the constitutionality of laws and its decisions are binding on all other courts
